Just How Important is Getting Your 5 A Day?

The “5 A Day” advice for fruit and vegetable intake is familiar to everyone – but why is it important and is it really very beneficial? Foods with a high vitamin C content such as citrus fruits and certain berries are well known to relieve symptoms of the common cold. There are many other healthy effects to be gained from eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables.

The antioxidant properties of foods like broccoli can help prevent cancer. Bananas (potassium) are beneficial for hearing. Foods with a high fibre content like carrots are good for weight loss. Spinach (vitamin B6) can alleviate stress.

Try substituting nuts for chocolate, fruit juice for coffee – it all helps to reach the 5 A Day target.
