There are a few ways to train for strength. The first one of these is traditional resistance training, in which you isolate only a muscle or a group of muscle to train.
You can also train using ballistic strength training. Using this technique you throw items without decelerating your movement.
Finally there is functional resistance training, which is primarily used to prevent injuries and make your muscles behave more efficiently in daily life.
The first 2 techniques have been widely studied, but the third one is a bit more new. Subjects using these technique have performed better in sports, being able to throw objects more than 22% farther. All these techniques are very useful for sports but the third one is more geared towards rehabilitation.
