Although wheat is one of the main sources of gluten, “wheat free” and “gluten free” diets are often incorrectly correlated. As 15% of people in North America are intolerant to gluten or wheat, elucidating the difference between these two diets can be fairly important. So what is the difference? A major component of wheat is gluten, and so gluten free diets are also wheat free. However, gluten free diets also restrict consumption of other foods, as gluten is not limited as a component to wheat. A gluten free diet will also cut out rye, barley, and oats. So can be done for someone who is allergic or suffer from illness related to gluten? Luckily, all it takes is a change of diet.
